31st May, designated International No Tobacco Day by the World Health Organisation,
provides the occasion for the Ministry of Transport,
Communications and Public Works to issue a postage stamp on an
anti-smoking theme. Its aim is to alert smokers, but especially
the young and parents and teachers to the harmful effects of smoking.
We hope that the issuing of this stamp -
at the suggestion of the National Oncological Institute in Bratislava -
will lend support to the worthy aims of the
international fight against smoking and foster increased interest
in health in general among all generations. It is our belief that
the transmission of such a message through visual art may be more
effective than any inventory of unpleasant facts.
