Shem Guibbory is recognized as an accomplished violin soloist and chamber musician whose interpretations have received international acclaim. He is a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and music director of the Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East.
As a solo artist, Shem approaches each composer as an individual person. His music making is at once playful and passionate, romantic and courageous, comforting and commanding. He challenges his audiences to become intimately involved with music and with him. Listeners can palpably feel life flow from one phrase of his music to another.
He has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Beethoven Halle Orchestra (Bonn), the Kansas City Symphony and the New World Symphony. He has performed recitals and chamber music concerts throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
This unique musician also reaches beyond the classics. The original violinist in "Steve Reich and Musicians," his recording of Violin Phase is now a classic of American avant-garde music. He was co-director of NovEnsemble, a company dedicated to performance of live music and dance, and collaborated with Belgian choreographer Anne-Theresa de Keersmaker and Bhutto master Koichi Tamano.
He has also had close associations with cutting edge composers, premiering over 60 compositions, with more than 30 works written expressly for him.
His recordings can be found on the ECM, Gramavision, Opus 1, CRI, and DG labels.
