Maigret on the Radio

and Audio versions

The first known (English language) Maigret radio production was aired by the BBC Home Service on Monday, December 9, 1957. It was "Maigret and the Lost Life", an adaptation of Maigret et la jeune morte (Maigret and the Young Girl). Maigret was played by Ralph Truman. (The same novel was adapted for BBC TV and aired on December 6, 1959, starring Basil Sydney as Maigret.)

CBC - Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - 1968-1977

In 1968-71 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation produced what was probably the first radio Maigret outside of Europe. Thanks to the fine detective work of Gary E. Marsa, who searched the Internet for radio listings in Canadian newspapers of that era, we may now have a virtually complete record. CBC aired a series of 18 Maigrets from 1968-1971, each in five 30-minute serials running Monday through Friday, broadcast as part of CBC's Theatre 10.30 series at 10:30-11:00 in the evening. They also aired a series of seven [or was it six? see Gary's notes below] Maigrets in their CBC Stage series, appx. one-hour Saturday evening shows, from 1974-1977.

Notes on the CBC Maigrets by Gary E. Marsa

Related article:

Lethbridge Herald, Sat. June 25, 1976, Leisure and TV Week section, p. 17:
SOUNDS LIKELY
Drama classics hard to beat
By JUNE GRAHAM

[This was a feature article about radio drama producer Peter Donkin of the CBC in Halifax, NS.—G.M.]
"…Another highlight of Donkin’s career is the masterly way he has brought some two dozen Inspector Maigret whodunits to life, by that Belgian novelist of Olympian output, Georges Simenon. The North American rights to these popular mystery stories were obtained in stiff competition with other countries…."

Comments and miscellany:

This accounts for (I think) all of the CBC Maigret dramatizations except one: “Maigret Sets a Trap,” which had to be an episode of CBC Stage. I have been compiling a log of that series and for the years in question, late 1974 to early 1977, I have filled all the possible slots. What I think happened — and I have no hard evidence for this — is the first broadcast of “Maigret and the Reluctant Witness” [sic] (on March 13, 1976) was really a broadcast of “Maigret Sets a Trap.” I believe the CBC must have given the wrong title in the publicity they sent to newspapers. My only evidence for this possibility lies in the recordings released by Durkin Hayes Audio. No broadcast dates were given on their packaging, of course, but general copyright or production dates were, and those were as follows:
Set #1—Maigret and the Killer (DHP 7452): “Maigret and the Killer,” 1975; “Maigret Sets a Trap,” 1976; “Maigret’s Christmas”; 1974.

Set #2—Maigret and the Reluctant Witness (DHP 7458): “Maigret and the Reluctant Witnesses,” 1977; “Maigret Hesitates,” 1976; “Maigret in Society,” 1975.

These all match the dates in my log if “Maigret Sets a Trap” is substituted for the first “Maigret and the Reluctant Witness” on 1976-03-13.

Theatre 10.30

Information about the Theatre 10.30 Maigret series is pretty sketchy. The Ottawa papers printed the names of several cast members for “Maigret at the Crossroads,” but for no other story; and notice that all five episodes of “Maigret in Montmartre” have subtitles, which makes me wonder if that was also the case for the other five-part dramatizations. Other than that, all we really learn from the newspapers about the programs (besides the titles and the airdates, of course) is that Budd Knapp played Maigret, Frederick Spoerly wrote the adaptations, and Peter Donkin produced and directed.

Theatre 10.30 debuted on Monday, Sept. 30, 1968 and ran through Friday, October 1, 1971, for a total of 157 weeks. Many of those weeks consisted of five-part dramatizations of novels (there was also a recurring series of C. S. Forester’s “Hornblower” tales, for instance); in other weeks half-hour plays by the same author or with a common theme were presented. Occasionally one or more episodes were pre-empted, usually for coverage of a political event.

I must reluctantly admit that it’s possible there are more Maigrets to be found here. I still have no information at all for nine full weeks of the Theatre 10.30 run. They are the weeks of 1968-10-14*, 1968-10-28, 1968-11-11, 1968-11-18, 1968-12-16, 1969-05-12*, 1969-06-16, 1969-10-20 and 1970-01-26. The two marked by asterisks came immediately after Maigret weeks; perhaps you’ve noticed that two Maigret novels were presented back-to-back on four different occasions that I’ve discovered so far. So I intend to keep looking.

Radio Update

I discovered a new source for Canadian radio drama and using it I was able to complete my log for the Theatre 10.30 program, including all the Maigrets. My update includes one new adaptation, Maigret's Revolver, and corrected dates for two others, Maigret Mystified and Maigret at the Crossroads. So, there were 19 five-part adaptations in all. Also, I found it possible to confirm my suspicion that the first (of two) Maigret and the Reluctant Witnesses among the hour-long programs should actually have been Maigret Sets a Trap. Corrections are shown above.

And here is something new, what information I could find about a late 60's French language Maigret serial broadcast by BBC Radio 4 in England for people learning French:

Much of the contents of this page is based on material from Inspector Maigret, one of Frank M. Passage's Old Time Radio Program Logs, which includes input from Ian Beard, Gary Marsa, Ray Blake, Dave Siegel, Arlene Osborne, and others, cited in more detail in the log.

And Maigret on BBC Radio, which also credits Ian Beard's log contributions. And Gerry Young, for the 2004 BBC Radio dates.

Cast lists for the BBC radio plays are from "notes by Jim" at George Simenon & Maigret Radio Plays, where additional information can be found.

Thanks to Andrew Jupp for providing the name of the first English radio Maigret, Ralph Truman, 1957.
