Penguin Maigret

This is an ongoing attempt at a comprehensive listing of the Penguin Maigret editions/printings, with cover images. Books with years shown in green are volumes I don't have, and so are unconfirmed. Apparently all but five* of the Maigrets have been issued in Penguin editions.	Please notify me of any corrections or additions. If you have a copy of one of the missing ones, or a nice copy of one of the ones I show in poor condition, which you'd like to sell, or which you can send a scan of, please let me know.

Stuart Radmore has located another copy of Maigret Afraid (1965 - C2250), apparently identical in all other respects, but with a cover price of 5/6.

Various of these Penguin Maigrets of the 1960s were also issued in Australia with cover prices of 4/6, 5/6, and 65¢. (thanks to Malcom Grace, and for additional images, and also to Jack Babrovskie, who pointed out that the dollar was not introduced as Australian currency until 1966.)

The Yellow Dog was previously issued by Penguin as A Face for a Clue, in a double edition entitled The Patience of Maigret along with A Battle of Nerves in 1946, and with A Crime in Holland, in 1952, translated by Geoffrey Sainsbury. This edition is translated by Linda Asher, with an introduction by Richard Vinen. The Bar on the Seine [La guinguette à deux sous] appears for the first time as a Penguin, translated by David Watson, with an introduction by Michael Dibdin. My Friend Maigret appeared in Penguin editions of 1959, 1961, 1962, and 1963. Lock 14 appeared as Maigret Meets a Milord in 1963, reprinted 1964, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, and in a 1983 triple edition along with Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets and Maigret and the Enigmatic Lett. Inspector Cadaver appeared as Maigret's Rival in a Penguin triple edition of 1985 along with The Night Club and Maigret in New York. This is the original translation by Helen Thomson, with an introduction by Paul Bailey. A Man's Head was previously published by Penguin as The Patience of Maigret in a double edition along with A Face for a Clue (The Yellow Dog, above) in 1946, and in 1950, 1951 in a double edition along with At the "Gai-Moulin". This is the original translation by Geoffrey Sainsbury, with an introduction by Patrick Marnham.

This is the first issue of a Penguin Maigret and the Ghost and The Hotel Majestic, as single volume editions. They had previously appeared in the 1982 "Collection" Volume Maigret and the Ghost (Along with the non-Maigret, Three Beds in Manhattan. The Friend of Mme Maigret was previously issued by Penguin as Mme Maigret's Friend. The Man on the Boulevard was previously issued by Penguin in the 13th Simenon Omnibus, as Maigret and the Man on the Boulevard. The Madman of Bergerac was previously issued in a Penguin with Liberty Bar as Maigret Travels South. This is the original Geoffrey Sainsbury translation, with an introduction by Richard Vinen.
