If not the greatest character actor of his time, French stage and film star Harry Baur was certainly one of the most beloved. Baur was 24 when he made his Paris stage debut, and 30 when he made his earliest film appearance in Shylock (1910). Hitting his cinematic stride in the 1930s, Baur played almost as many famous factual and fictional personages than George Arliss and Paul Muni combined. He starred as Jean Valjean in the 1934 French adaptation of Les Miserables, Porfiry in Crime and Punishment (1935), Emperor Rudolph in 1936's Der Golem, and as the title character in Rothschild (1933), Taras Boulba (1936), Un Grande Amour de Beethoven (1936), Rasputin (1938) and Volpone (1939). Tragically, with the advent of Hitler, Baur learned that fame was no cushion against fanaticism. While he was in Berlin to star in his last film, 1942's Symphonie eines Lebens, Baur's Jewish wife was arrested on trumped-up espionage charges. His efforts to secure his wife's freedom led to his own arrest and torture at the hands of the Gestapo. In April of 1943, the Germans made a great show of releasing Harry Baur from prison; a few days later, however, he died under mysterious circumstances in Paris. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Rupert Davies was born in Wales, May 22, 1916, and died in London, November 22, 1976, of cancer. (He is buried in the graveyard of the small church dedicated to St Beuno in Pistyll, Wales.)
Davies, a British character actor who first appeared onscreen in the '60s, is best known for his role as Maigret in the long-running BBC TV series. In 1961 he was voted British actor of the year. He was not quite the original BBC Maigret: After the first (1959) episode Basil Sydney had to leave the series due to injury; Davies played Maigret for the remaining 51 episodes from 1960 through 1963, becoming more or less synonymous with the role. Simenon once gave him a novel inscribed, "At last I have found the perfect Maigret." |
1. Murder in Montmarte
(Maigret au "Picratt's").
BBC TV (English).
1960 (10/31/60).

Screenplay: Giles Cooper.

([from the 1950's British television nostalgia Maigret page.] Maigret was first introduced to BBC TV as a part of their Sunday-Night Theatre presentations with 'Maigret and the Lost Life' (6/12/59), written by Giles Cooper from a 1954 novel by Georges Simenon and produced/directed by Campbell Logan. Basil Sydney played Commissioner Maigret in the 75-minute production, supported by Henry Oscar, Patrick Troughton, Mary Merrall, and Andre Van Gyseghem. The actual series began in October 1960, the first of what would eventually become four series totalling 51 episodes of 45/55 mins. The BBC had acquired the rights, with Simenon's blessing, against worldwide competition, making it their most ambitious series production to that date. The casting of Rupert Davies as Maigret greatly pleased Simenon at the time; supporting players included Ewen Solon (as his assistant Lucas) and Helen Shingler (as Madame Maigret).).

Jean-Alexis Moncourge (May 27, 1904 - Nov 15, 1976) was born in Paris. He assumed his father's stage name to become Jean Gabin. He was married three times (Gaby Basset 1928-1931, Jeanne Susanne Mauchin 1932-1942, and Dominique Fournier 1949-), and had three children. In addition to his acting career, Gabin was a war hero. | Though he once declared, "I hate movies. They're a waste of time," Irish actor Richard Harris built a film career that lasted six decades and withstood a long fallow period in the 1970s and '80s. Often as famous for his offscreen exploits as his acting, Harris nevertheless was lauded for charismatic performances ranging from the tough, inarticulate rugby player in This Sporting Life (1963) to the wry bounty hunter in Unforgiven(1992) and the contemplative emperor in Gladiator (2000). Harris died in 2002, after winning over a new generation of fans with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). |

 | Anglo-American actor, b. Scarborough, England. A large, versatile character actor, Laughton was successful both in films and on the stage. In The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), his lusty portrait of the king, for which he won the Academy Award, was startlingly direct. Other notable roles include Ruggles of Red Gap (1935), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), and Advise and Consent (1962). He directed one film, The Night of the Hunter (1955), a forceful allegory of good and evil. In 1951 he directed and starred in a dramatic reading of Shaw's Don Juan in Hell. |

 | A former WWI flying ace, French actor Albert Prejean is best known for playing heroes in the silent films of René Clair. Before entering the military, Prejean had worked as a nightclub entertainer and acrobat. His popularity in film began to wane after the advent of sound and he spent the rest of his career appearing in average-quality mainstream films. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide |

The son of impressionist artist Auguste Renoir, actor Pierre Renoir was also the older brother of director Jean Renoir and the father of cinematographer Claude Renoir. He made his stage debut in the first decade of the 20th century and his first film in 1911. In 1932 he became the first actor to portray Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret in La Nuit de Carrefour. His subsequent screen assignments included Charles Bovary in Madame Bovary (1933) and Louis XVI in La Marseillaise (1935), both directed by his brother Jean Renoir. During the war years he appeared in only a handful of films, most memorably as Jericho in Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise (1945). Pierre Renoir's final film was Dr. Knock, completed the year before his death. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

 | Jean Richard was born in Bessines, western France, on April 18, 1921. He died of cancer on December 12, 2001, near Paris. He began his working life as a caricaturist before turning to comedy and then acting. He went on to appear in some 80 movies, but it was his TV role as Simenon's Maigret, for which he had been selected by director Claude Barma, that made him famous. Beginning with Cécile est morte in 1967, for over 20 years and 92(?) episodes, more than any other actor, Richard portrayed the most celebrated French commissioner, ending with Maigret à New York in June, 1990. His memoirs, Ma vie sans filet [My life without a safety net], were published in 1984 by Robert Laffont. |
