Behind the scenes at the police 2/8/07 – [translation] Following the invaluable information provided by Jérôme (Forum, Nov. 19, 2006), I was able to get a copy of Simenon"s book, "[My apprenticeship: articles 1931-1946]" (Omnibus),where the author tells, among other things, of his visits to the Quai des Orfèvres. These texts are very interesting, and just to make your mouth water, I'd like to present you here with an extract from "Behind the scenes at the police", 12 articles published in January and February 1934 in Paris-Soir. This is taken from the beginning of the third article, "From the Detective Novel to Reality". We note here, once more, the finesse of the humor so characteristic of Simenon... "On January 24, at noon, three armed individuals burst into the premises of the Baruch Bank, threatening the employees, wounding one, and fleeing with the contents of the safe, some 135,000 francs. What would happen in a detective novel? Chief Inspector Maigret would arrive at the scene, ponderous and secretive, smoke a dozen pipes, send for beer and sandwiches, and finally leave, hands in the pockets of his overcoat. Over the course of three days and three nights, we'd follow him into bistros, lodgings, into the streets, always smoking, drinking more and more beer, waiting to place his heavy hand on the shoulder of his prey, sighing, "The jig is up, my boy!" Sherlock Holmes, accompanied by Doctor Watson, would take some measurements, scrape together 3 grains of dust, and shut himself up in his Baker Street apartment, then play the violin for a few hours, finally stopping to declare, "At least one of the robbers, 5'9" tall, with two gold teeth, lived in 1913 between the 22nd and 13th degree of latitude north. Another is divorced. The third has sensitive feet. I'm going to tell you how things happen - and I can add, how they always happen, in reality. Of course we begin by interviewing M. Baruch, who states, "I believe the robbers spoke with a Yugoslav accent." Another employee or two repeat, "They had Yugoslav accents." But the cashier was right there, and he affirms forcefully, "They were speaking Hungarian to each other! I'm sure! I know the language!" This doesn't look like much, but you'll see! Six thousand Hungarian suspects, more or less, living in Paris and the suburbs, are known to the Prefecture of Police. 6,000 files are thus carefully checked. Women, old men and children are set aside, and there remain, in the first sifting, 600 Hungarians capable of having hit the Baruch Bank. And the whereabouts of these individuals on the day of the robbery have to be verified! Do you have any idea what that represents? 600 men of all social levels, living all over the place! And our inspectors, who are not reimbursed if they go by taxi, go from one address to another. Are you still laughing now, speaking of their hob-nailed boots? "I was in such-and-such a café!" responds a Hungarian. Now, his alibi has to be verified, checked with the patron, the customers. "Me, I was in such-and-such a store." The saleswoman is of course on her day off, and there's nothing to be done but to come back tomorrow. That takes three days, during which time there's a certain emptiness at the Quai des Orfèvres. Les coulisses de la police Suite aux précieuses indications de Jérôme (forum du 19 novembre 2006), je me suis procuré le livre de Simenon: "Mes apprentissages, reportages 1931-1946" (Edition Omnibus), où l'auteur raconte, entre autres, ses visites au Quai des Orfèvres. Ces textes sont très intéressants, et juste pour "mettre l'eau à la bouche" de nos amis maigretphiles, j'aimerais citer ici un extrait de "Les coulisses de la police", 12 articles publiés en janvier et février 1934 dans "Paris-Soir". L'extrait est tiré du début du 3e article, intitulé "Du roman policier à la réalité". On notera, une fois de plus, la finesse de l'humour si caractéristique de Simenon. Trois jours, trois nuits durant, nous le suivrions dans des bistrots, dans des logements, dans les rues, fumant toujours, buvant de plus en plus de bière en attendant de poser sa patte sur l'épaule d'un quidam en soupirant: - T'es fait, petit ! Sherlock Holmes, accompagné du docteur Watson, prendrait quelques mesures, ramasserait trois grains de poussière puis, enfermé dans son appartement de Baker Street, jouerait du violon pendant quelques heures, ne s'arrêterait que pour déclarer: - Un des cambrioleurs au moins, qui mesure un mètre soixante-treize et a deux dents en or, a vécu en 1913 entre le 22e et le 13e degré de latitude nord. Un autre est divorcé. Le troisième a les pieds sensibles. Je vais vous dire, moi, comment les choses se sont passées – et je pourrais ajouter: comment elles se passent toujours dans la réalité. Bien entendu, on commence par interroger M. Baruch, qui déclare: - Je crois que les cambrioleurs avaient l'accent yougoslave. Un employé, deux employés répètent: - Ils avaient l'accent yougoslave. Mais le caissier, lui, est justement de par là; il affirme avec force: - Ils ont parlé hongrois entre eux! J'en suis sûr! Je connais cette langue! Cela n'a l'air de rien. Vous allez voir! Six mille Hongrois plus ou moins suspects, habitant Paris et la banlieue, sont connus à la Préfecture de Police. Six mille dossiers ont donc été examinés avec soin. Femmes, vieillards et enfants mis à part, il resta, après ce premier tri, six cents Hongrois susceptibles d'avoir fait le coup de la Banque Baruch. Et l'emploi du temps de ces six cents individus le jour du vol a été vérifié! Avez-vous une idée de ce que cela représente? Six cents hommes de toutes classes sociales, habitant les quartiers les plus divers! Et nos inspecteurs, à qui on ne paie pas leurs déplacements en taxi, allant d'une adresse à l'autre. Rirez-vous encore, maintenant, en parlant de leurs souliers à clous? - J'étais dans tel café! répond un Hongrois. Or, il faut vérifier son alibi, interroger le patron, les clients. - Moi, j'étais dans tel magasin. La vendeuse a justement son jour de congé et il n'y a qu'à revenir le lendemain. Cela dura trois jours, pendant lesquels il y eut un certain vide au quai des Orfèvres. Et alors on apprit que le caissier avait tort, que M. Baruch avait raison: les bandits n'étaient pas hongrois mais yougoslaves et tout était à recommencer. " Murielle Wenger
