The Children
"The Children" is a story of the streets of New York, the slum streets and the children who live in them. It is a very moving story, filled with the contradictions of childhood, a mingling of horror and innocence, of tragedy and childish play and dreams. The characters in this novel, Ollie and Ishky and Marie and Shoemake, with their fears and passions, their young pride and prejudice, live in a world apart from the world of adults, though it is not a world of their making. It is a world as insecure as any jungle and there is a kind of terrifying beauty, as there is an inescapable evil, to the life that children must lead in such a world.
